Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the test?
Our tests provide a quick estimate of your proficiency level based on 30 carefully crafted questions. While not a replacement for official certification exams, they give you a reliable indication of where you stand. Each test covers vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and listening (where available) to provide a well-rounded assessment.
How long does each test take?
Most users complete a test in 10-15 minutes. The test includes 30 questions covering vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening (where available). You can take as much time as you need - there's no time limit on individual questions.
Is this an official certification?
No, Language Level Check is not an official testing body. We provide estimated proficiency levels based on established frameworks like CEFR (A1-C2) for most European languages, JLPT (N5-N1) for Japanese, HSK (1-9) for Mandarin Chinese, and TOPIK (1-6) for Korean. For official certification, please contact the relevant testing organizations.
Is the app really free?
Yes! Language Level Check is completely free to use. No account required, no subscriptions, no hidden fees. Just download the app, pick a language, and start testing. We built this as a passion project for language learners.
What proficiency frameworks do you use?
We map results to internationally recognized frameworks. CEFR (A1-C2) is used for most European languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Polish, and more. JLPT (N5-N1) is used for Japanese, HSK (1-9) for Mandarin Chinese, and TOPIK (1-6) for Korean. For languages without standardized frameworks, we provide a general proficiency assessment from Beginner to Advanced.
Can I retake a test?
Absolutely! You can retake any test as many times as you like. We save your best results for each language so you can track your progress over time. This is great for measuring improvement as you continue learning.
What skills does the test cover?
Each test covers four skill areas where possible - vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension. For some languages (Ukrainian, Malay, Filipino, and Persian), listening is not yet available, so the test focuses on reading and comprehension skills.
How many languages do you support?
Language Level Check supports 37 different languages across 8 major world regions - East Asian (Japanese, Mandarin, Korean), Western European (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch), Eastern European (Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Greek, Bulgarian, Croatian, Slovak, Serbian), Nordic (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish), Southeast Asian (Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Malay, Filipino), South Asian (Hindi, Bengali), Middle Eastern (Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Persian), and African (Swahili).
Is my data stored or shared?
No! All your data stays on your device. We don't collect, store, or share any of your personal information or test results. If you delete the app, all your data is deleted with it. See our Privacy Policy for more details.
Why don't all languages have listening tests?
We're continuously working to add listening comprehension to all languages. Currently, Ukrainian, Malay, Filipino, and Persian tests focus on reading and comprehension due to the complexity of sourcing quality audio content. We hope to add listening support for these languages in future updates.
